American Will No Longer Allow Reservation Holds

Those of you who put reservations on hold for free with American will now have less time to decide on whether booking or passing on a trip. Per Gary from View From The Wing, as of tomorrow April 1, 2016, American will eliminate reservation holds and instead offer refunds, as Delta and United do, 24 hours after purchase, for travel booked at least 7 days in advance.

There was speculation that American was going to follow this model to be aligned with what the competitors were doing but I for one, got pure joy from the reservation holds. Sort of like a game, I loved finding amazing fares that I had originally no trip plans for and turning it into something. The 24 hour hold bought me time to pitch a trip idea to DD Mommy and bring it into fruition.

BOOK NOW, PLAN LATER is the motto when finding mind-blowing-sick-to-your-stomach-holy-cow-that’s-dirt-cheap airline fares. The silver lining: As long as you’re 7 days away or more from your travel dates, you can still book right away when you see a great fare and if plans fall through, you have up to 24 hours to get a full refund.

I’ll be speculatively putting an international ticket on hold today for early 2017 travel and playing the game one last time before I have to decide if I’ll take the trip or not. As the motto of airline news lately, “all good things must come to an end”.
