Cancun Flights At A Laughable Cost

In August I registered for the JetBlue #GoForthWithJetBlue Points Match promotion, which matched my Virgin America points to JetBlue points after one roundtrip flight. I didn’t have any Virgin America points so I did what any travel hacker would do and transferred some points from my SPG account to my VX Elevate account.

By transferring 40,001 SPG points to Virgin America, I now had 50,001 Virgin America Elevate points (bonus of 10K points) which was the exact amount of points needed to get the maximum 75,000 JetBlue miles from the #GoForthWithJetBlue Points Match promotion.

All I needed to do now was take ONE roundtrip on JetBlue before August 31st and I’d be 75,000 miles richer. Cost of mileage run and what route I chose is described in detail in this post.

Fast forward to last week, I was looking at flights to Cancun for early January to take the family on an all-inclusive vacation and now I had 75,000 JetBlue points in my JetBlue account balance. Checking on flights from Fort Lauderdale to Cancun, I was thrilled when I saw I could get my family to/from Cancun for 37,200!

37,200 points for a family of 4

Thanks to JetBlue’s revenue-based award program, flight redemptions with points are based on the cost of the ticket. Our flights would have cost over $1,000 for the 4 of us and instead, I paid 37,200 points plus $205 in taxes and fees. I still have 30,000+ JetBlue points in my account that I will use to cover another vacation. Given that the mileage run flight I took to earn the 75,000 cost me $70 and I paid $205 in taxes and fees, I view this as an incredible redemption for 4 roundtrip tickets to paradise at a total cost of $275 out-of-pocket.

Looking forward to taking G&O to Cancun and creating more memories. It’s always sweeter when you can provide these experiences for your family…….at a laughable cost!
