Date Night: L.A. – Parents Gone Wild

If you were on social media last Friday, you may have noticed some posts I shared with the hashtag #ParentsGoneWild. That’s because, DD Mommy and I took a very quick trip to Los Angeles Friday morning and returned the next day to G&O. We may not have gotten too wild and crazy but we did have a great time in L.A., just the two of us. You see, with our schedules being what they are during the week and weekends dedicated to G&O, we rarely do date nights despite the fact that we’re well aware how important they are for a marriage/relationship.

A few weeks back, The Flight Deal posted a very good fare from Miami to Los Angeles for under $200 roundtrip. A few months before that, DD Mommy, who flies a considerable amount for business, mentioned to me she was concerned she would fall short of re-qualifying for Executive Platinum status on American Airlines. Convincing DD Mommy on how important having AA top tier status was to her comfort and well-being on those long business trips took a while, but once she saw the benefits first-hand, there was no turning back. There’s a reason why thousands of people start worrying when the end of the year approaches and the 100,000 mile threshold to reach Executive Platinum with AA is in jeopardy.

So to speed up this part of the story, we calculated all her pending work trips left for the year and came to the conclusion that she’d still need about 4,000 miles left to reach 100K and get Executive Platinum for 2016 – early 2017. Was a mileage run in order? Why not a trip to L.A. with me for a “date night” and she can reach her 100,000 miles while I can get my always-seeking travel fix?

Once we got to L.A., we ate, drank, walked around Venice Beach and most importantly, laughed together. A lot. It was the type of “date night” or “date day and date night” that couldn’t of gone any better. A mental break, an adventure, something different, are terms I would use to describe this little plan of mine. I’m now seriously considering doing more of these trips when the price is right and the timing works out. Or maybe we’ll just stay close to home and go to a neighborhood spot for dinner and drinks?
