Gone Baby Gone – 1 Week Left For British Airways 4,500 Point Awards

Hey you? Yeah you! Do you have an American Express credit card that earns membership reward points or a Chase credit card that earns ultimate reward points? You do? Well, this is a reminder from your favorite blogger that you have one week left to book your American Airlines short-haul flights with British Airways Avios before the points increase. Just initiate the transfer from Amex or Chase to BA, which is a partner of both. The transfer of points is instant and you should be able to book your flight almost immediately. As a reminder, the increase in one-way cost from 4,500 to 7,500 will be for flights to, from or within North America.

As I wrote about last week Avios Sweet Spot and a few months ago Avios Devaluation Breaks My Heart, the time to book is now if you have any trips planned in the next 11 months. As of today, flights less than 650 miles one-way can be redeemed for just 4,500 Avois points one-way. Starting February 3, 2016 at 5am EST, those same flights will go up to 7,500 points one-way!

Here are a few combinations that you could fly for 4,500 one-way:

North America and Caribbean:

  • Los Angeles to Las Vegas (LAS), Phoenix (PHX), San Francisco (SFO), Salt Lake City (SLC)
  • New York (JFK/LGA) to Boston (BOS), Cleveland (CLE), Montreal (YUL), Pittsburgh (PIT), Toronto (YYZ), Washington (DCA)
  • Chicago (ORD) to Atlanta (ATL), Detroit (DTW), Minneapolis (MSP), Raleigh (RDU), St. Louis (STL), Toronto (YYZ)
  • Miami (MIA) to Cancun (CUN), Montego Bay (MBJ), Punta Cana (PUJ), Providenciales, Turks & Caicos (PLS), Atlanta (ATL)

For those in Europe, Asia, Africa and Australia:

  • Hong Kong (HKG) to Taipei (TPE)
  • Sydney (SYD) to Brisbane (BNE), Melbourne (MEL)
  • London (LHR) to Amsterdam (AMS), Berlin (BER), Dublin (DUB), Frankfurt (FRA), Milan (MXP), Munich (MUC), Nice (NCE) Paris (CDG), Zurich (ZRH)
  • Helsinki (HEL) to Moscow (SVO), Oslo (OSL), Stockholm (ARN)
  • Madrid (MAD) to Algiers (ALG), Barcelona (BCN), Casablanca (CMN), Geneva (GVA), Lisbon (LIS)
  • Lima (LIM) to Cuzco (CUZ)
  • Amman (AMM) to Baghdad (BGW), Cairo (CAI), Medina (MED)
  • Doha (DOH) to Dubai (DXB), Muscat (MCT), Riyadh (RUH)

Remember, you have until February 2, 2016 to book any of these short-haul flights! This has been an incredible deal in the points and miles world. I’m grateful I was able to book a few of these with points + fees that come out to a fraction of the cash cost of the ticket. For example, I paid 9,000 Avios + $92 to fly to Turks and Caicos when the price of the ticket WITHOUT points would have set me back $632! For a family of 4, that’s a few thousand dollars in savings!

Conclusion:

While I am sad to see my favorite ‘sweet spot’ redemption in the points and miles game go, I’m grateful for the travel opportunities it gave my family and I. Before it vanishes, book your American Airlines short-haul flights with British Airways Avios by February 2nd and lock in the 4,500 one-way price.

Do you plan on booking a flight before February 3rd with Avios? If not, sorry to hear. If so, where to?
