Is Kissing Your Child On The Lips OK?

Listen, I used to be one of those people before I became a parent that would wonder why parents would kiss their children on the lips. My parents certainly never kissed me on the lips as a child and yet I ask my twin toddlers for kisses every chance I get. It’s not “weird” or “inappropriate” for me to do so and I actually look forward to my daily kiss from them before I leave for work and when I get home in the evening. After all, I’m their Dad and no one should judge how parents ‘should’ display their affection with their babies, in good reason of course.

In a society where everything is publicized and no one is safe from criticism (especially celebrities), Victoria Beckham and my favorite former Spice Girl is being criticized harshly for posting a photo on Instagram with her kissing 5 year old daughter Harper on the lips while in a pool on Harper’s birthday.  I find it ridiculous that a parent showing affection to their children in a way that is deemed inappropriate by others is being lambasted on social media and in the press, as if there is a right or wrong way to show your child love.

Ask a young child if they would prefer a kiss on the lips from their Mommy or Daddy or physical abuse. It wouldn’t take a rocket science to predict that 100% of children would choose the former. Our society isn’t what it used to be. We were a tad bit more desensitized to society beliefs and had more freedom to express ourselves how we wanted to. Today, you have to be cautious of what you post on social media channels because the world is watching and you’re on someone’s moral compass radar.

Whether you’re pro or con on whether parents should kiss their children on the lips, one thing is for certain, you can’t beat love. Love will win everytime.
