Our LOVE-LY Weekend In Paradise For Under $500

Explaining travel redemptions and how to maximize value on your points, miles and credit card sign-ups can be a bit complicating to illustrate to people interested in “the game”. The sole purpose in me writing these posts are to educate so one day you utilize some of the same strategies to travel at a hugely discounted rate or even FOR FREE!

Exhibit A: Valentine’s Day weekend to Montego Bay, Jamaica for a family of 4.

You already know that British Airways killed the 4,500 OW award originating in the US as I warned repeatedly here and here. Luckily I was able to book in advance and transfer 36,000 points (9,000 per family member) from my Chase Ultimate Rewards account to British Airways and book 4 roundtrip tickets from Miami to Montego Bay, Jamaica.

Flight cost: 36,000 points and $464 in fuel surcharges and taxes. Not entirely free you would say but given that flights were pricing out at $380 per person when I was searching, this is a very solid redemption. I’ll pose the question for my newbies, what would you rather pay for 4 airline tickets: 36,000 points and $464 OR $1,520 for a family of 4?

Winner: Points

Lodging cost: The purpose for choosing Montego Bay for our Valentine’s Day weekend trip with the girls was the Hyatt Ziva, an all-inclusive high-end family resort. I don’t love all-inclusive resorts but I do love not worrying about a thing when traveling with babies so we opted to try it out. Thanks to one of my favorite hotel cards out there, the Chase Hyatt card, we received 2 free nights at ANY Hyatt property in the world (including all-inclusive resorts) after meeting the very reasonable $1,000 spend in 3 months. Given that rates were pricing out at a WHOPPING $1,000/night per room, this was a no-brainer redemption method to use our 2 free night awards at Hyatt Ziva Rose Hall. Would you rather pay 2,000+ for 2 nights OR get 2 nights ABSOLUTELY FREE including all food, drinks and entertainment for a family of 4?

Winner: Points

Conclusion: Because we stayed at an all-inclusive, my only out-of-pocket expense was tips for the hotel staff that graciously made our stay special. A family of 4 spent a weekend in Jamaica for under $500.

Everyting is irie mon.
