The Credit Card Perk I’ll Miss The Most

Last year I was approved for the Citi Prestige and at the time, was one of the most exciting cards to hit the market. Being a Citi Prestige cardholder meant being able to play three free rounds of golf per calendar year at over 2,400 public and private courses worldwide. That’s six free rounds before my second annual fee is due–three in 2016 and three more in early 2017.

The excitement was short lived when Citi announced some benefits would be gutted from the Citi Prestige on July 23, 2017. Sort of the rug being pulled out from underneath my feet as I was just starting to think this card was a long term keeper despite the $450 annual fee.

Some of the benefits to be slashed on July 23, 2017 will be:

  • No more Admiral’s Club access
  • 4th night free will be calculated based on the avg. nightly rate instead of the last night rate
  • Removal of 1.6 cent per point redemptions on American Airlines
  • 3 free rounds of golf are being removed

As a casual golfer who enjoys teeing off on a round every month or so, the Citi Prestige golf benefit is one of the best kept secrets in the credit card world. I’ve already played over $1,000 worth of golf rates in less than a year of being a cardholder.

If you don’t play golf, I understand why the other soon-to-be removed benefits are much more impactful to you. However, being able to play at courses like the Blue Monster at Doral and Miami Beach Golf Club where rates reach up to $400 a round, is an incredible perk for me.

Unfortunately after July 23rd, this perk will be gone and I’ll be playing three FREE rounds prior to closing my Citi Prestige card. The devaluation damage has been done.

What do you think about the Citi Prestige golf benefit being removed? Care or don’t care?
